Martin Hartley was in year 11 at Fort Street High School in Petersham, one of
Sydney’s top selective schools. Marty has a wide-ranging musical experience,
and took every opportunity he could to play the instruments while he was in the
shop for a week during May 2002.
Between tuning calls, we had a most interesting time working on the restoration of the Alec Hodsdon clavichord. Built in 1949 by one of the first English makers interested in the instrument, we had to replace the bridge and soundboard, and mark out, drill and string, preserving the original overspun strings used in the bass.
