Sewing Table with concealed Fortepiano, J Lier 1846
49: F-f''' Signature in lead on the inside bottom of the instrument. Case with rosewood veneer with marquetry lid exterior, resting on a pedestal base with castors. Hinged fallboard with mother of pearl escutcheon drops down level to play. Viennese action. Keyboard with ivory naturals. Removable unit with central pincushion and storage boxes with rosewood lids and ivory handles fits over soundboard area, and a simpler smaller unit sits over the keyboard. Lid is held open by a swing mirror with original glass. A very similar, although less elaborately decorated instrument, is in the Smithsonian Institution (1992.0192.01). It featured in the “Piano 300” exhibition in 2001 and is illustrated on page 39 of the catalog. $20000 |
